Are you going to be having a skincare or body treatment? If so, you’ll need to double down on aftercare. Everyone’s skin will react slightly differently to treatment, meaning you’ll need a custom aftercare program to ensure you’re getting the best recovery and results possible.
Caring for yourself following any treatment or procedure is essential. Just like coming home after a day in the sun, you’ll need to take extra steps and be gentle with your skin and body to ensure your safety and recovery.
At InMode, we try to make the steps of caring for yourself a more straightforward, helpful process with the aid of our experienced team. Here are seven skincare tips post-treatment.
1. Follow Post-Treatment Instructions
Your clinic or aesthetician will provide you with detailed instructions after every treatment. It's vital that you follow them, even with our minimally-invasive and non-invasive procedures, because although our treatments have minimal downtime, these will help the aftermath run as smoothly as possible
These instructions may include conditions such as sleeping in an elevated position and avoiding other facial movements, facial massages, skin or dental treatments and procedures for at least two weeks. All of these instructions are here to help you recuperate in comfort.
You can request a physical copy of your post-treatment aftercare instructions or have them emailed to you for reference.
2. Use a Gentle Cleanser
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a salicylic gel or benzoyl peroxide wash may work wonders. For dry or mature skin, try using either a moisturising glycolic or milky cleanser.
It is important to remember that if you have just had an InMode face treatment done (such as Morpheus8), the procedure will leave your skin in a highly sensitive state. For this reason, we recommend that you avoid all skin care products that contain any kind of ‘active ingredients’ such as retinol, alpha hydroxy acids and Vitamin C.
You can incorporate these products back into your regime three to five days after your treatment or as recommended by your experienced clinician.
3. Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure
Following a skincare treatment, especially treatments that involve IPL, like Lumecca, you should limit your exposure to direct sunlight. This is because your skin’s protective barrier is weakened, leaving it vulnerable to damage.
UV rays from the sun are unrelenting and harsh; they can cause extra damage to your skin if you’re in the sun for too long. Certain post-treatment aftercare recommends reducing all prolonged contact with heat, including saunas, hot tubs and even hot showers.
Try wearing hats, carrying a parasol or umbrella, using face covers and taking cool showers for post-treatment aftercare.
4. Use Sunscreen
In line with limiting your sun exposure, using sunscreen is the number one rule for all skincare – and that includes skincare tips post-treatment to keep your skin healthy while also improving your recovery.
The importance of sunscreen can never be overstated. Although some people feel they only need to protect themselves on sunny days or when visiting the beach, the truth is that we need to protect our skin all the time.
Daily UV exposure contributes to the visible signs of ageing and can further harm your skin as it tries to heal following a skincare treatment.
But what kind of sunscreen is best? Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or greater — and remember that it needs to be reapplied every two hours.
InMode’s Insight: 90% of fine lines are caused by sun exposure, which makes sunscreen the ultimate tool for younger-looking skin.
5. Moisturise & Hydrate Your Skin
The key to post-treatment aftercare is supporting your skin barrier through hydration. Healthy skin needs this barrier to both protect your body and facilitate healing after a treatment. This doesn’t just mean using an occlusive moisturiser but also drinking plenty of water and fluids to replenish your skin from the inside out.
Occlusive moisturisers act as a barrier between your skin and the outside world. They prevent water loss and protect your skin in its fragile state post-treatment. With regular use during aftercare, it should allow your skin’s barrier to heal in a healthier, sustainable way.
When used in conjunction with plenty of water intake, hydrating your skin may help with post-treatment aftercare.
6. Limit Heavy Makeup & Products
You may be tempted to slather on makeup or skincare products in order to combat any side effects post-treatment, but we urge you not to. It’s better that you don’t congest or overload your skin. A gentle cleaner, effective moisturiser and high SPF sunscreen will do the trick during your post-treatment aftercare.
Your skin is likely to be more inflamed and irritated after a skincare procedure. During this time, protecting your skin’s barrier and limiting the amount of chemicals and products it's exposed to will help replenish that barrier.
Heavy makeup or skincare products can also clog your pores, which may cause further inflammation or irritation. Give your skin a much-needed break.
7. Avoid Harsh Products & Ingredients
Tying in with limiting your use of makeup and products, you may have to opt for gentler products during your post-treatment aftercare. Every skin is different, and every skin aftercare plan should be tailor-made. Ask your clinic or aesthetician how long you should avoid these harsher products, whether that’s retinol, AHAs or BHAs. Every skin barrier is unique and can take time to recover properly. Healthy, glowing skin is the ideal end result and caring for it with gentle products will help you achieve this. Avoid diving into your usual routine too quickly to prevent slowing your recovery process. By caring for your skin properly after your treatment, you’ll also help to maximise the benefits you’ll get longer term.
